London Luton Airport redevelopment: three years of time-lapse

Our time-lapse film of the London Luton Airport redevelopment.

The project

The redevelopment was the biggest single investment in London Luton Airport’s history. The £150m programme was designed to raise capacity by 50%, from 12 million to 18 million passengers a year.

Work began in January 2016. The first phase opened in July 2017 and delivered a new road network, a 1,700-space multi-storey car park and a remodelled bus and coach station. The scheme also included a dual carriageway into the airport, an additional aircraft taxiway, a new two-storey boarding pier (Pier B) and an extended terminal with twice as many security lanes.

The brief

The airport needed a visual record of a programme spread across roads, car parks, the airfield and the terminal. Progress had to be easy to share inside the business and on social media.

What we installed

Site Eye installed three mains-powered time-lapse cameras, positioned to cover the main work areas. The cameras ran for about three years, capturing images throughout the working day. Every image was uploaded to Site Eye’s secure online portal and was also available through a mobile phone app, so the airport team could check progress from anywhere.

How the footage was used

  • Monitoring the build: the portal and app let the team check any area of the works without a site visit.
  • Internal communication: multiple users across the business could see and download every image captured, in easy-to-use files.
  • Social media: progress images and clips were shared on the airport’s social media.
  • Monthly progress films: Site Eye edited a monthly time-lapse video, which helped the airport mark key milestones.

The result

The airport now has a complete, date-stamped visual record of its largest ever investment, from the first road works to the finished terminal. The monthly films gave stakeholders a simple way to follow three years of change.
